“Dance criticism” is one of the major branches of art criticism. There are various fields of criticism such as ‘literary criticism’, ‘music criticism’, ‘social criticism’, ‘journal criticism’, ‘economical criticism’, even ‘interior criticism’ which deals with such a minute area of our daily living like interior design. In the criticism of art, there are supposed to be a branch called ‘dance criticism’. ‘Dance criticism’ is a separate entity as an academic field, but it doesn"t mean that dance criticism has its own discipline or principles which cannot be applied to other branches of criticism. In other words, dance criticism is not different in its nature from other criticism of art. Of course, it should be admitted that every field of criticism has its own techniques of analysis and standards of evaluation, hut principles applied to dance should be relevant in any other fields of art criticism. Charles Augustin de Sainte-Beuve(1804-1869), a French literary critic in the 19th century, defines the condition of criticism as “not having one"s own art or style”. According to him, if a critic has his own style, he would like to fit the work of art in question into his particular thought or style, which means that his critique can be biased with his own preconceptions and interests. So we should say that critics are supposed to do justice to a given work of art without any prejudice. Now we define the task and function of the dance criticism as follows:
First, reasonable and disinterested judgment can be achieved only by horizontal or synchronic comparison and contrast with other fields of art.
Second, dance critic should have extensive knowledge of the history and the theory of art, which enables him to carry out diachronic research.
Third, a critic should know what is possible and what is impossible in the actual creation of the work.
Dance critics should be aware of these principles, if he is to be a great critic. The task of dance criticism in our time is to make the performers and the audience understand each other better, to familiarize them, to direct them to appreciate the work of art more properly and, finally, to show the way of progress in the given field of art.
