한국에서 “대안교육”의 전개과정 및 성격과 주요 문제점

The Evolution, Characteristics, and Major Issues in “Alternative Education” in Korea

  이 글은 지난 1990년대 중엽 이래 우리나라 사회에서 빠르게 확산되어 온 “대안교육”의 전개과정 및 그 성격과 주요 문제점을 밝히기 위한 것이다. 우리 사회에서 소위 그러한 대안교육은 학문이론적 작업에서 출발한 것이라기 보다는 하나의 실천적 교육운동으로 전개되어 왔다. 그런 점에서 지금까지 현장에서 상당부분 불명료하게 남아있던 대안교육의 개념을 이러한 이론적 작업을 통해서 좀더 명석하게 하기 위한 것이다. 현재 시점에서 대별이 가능한 두가지 실천 유형을 중심으로 다루었다. 하나는 공교육 제도권 울타리 밖에서 대안학교 설립이라는 형태로 구현되어 온 것이고, 다른 하나는 공교육제도권 “안”과 “밖”을 망라하여 (우리사회 전체의) 특정한 변화를 지향한 것이다. 여기서 필자는 이러한 전개과정에서 각각의 유형들이 함축하고 있는 철학과 강조점의 특징을 밝히고 이를 근거로 현재 시점에서 다룰 만한 쟁점과 앞으로의 과제를 살피는데 초점을 맞추었다. 이 역사적 연구에서 필자는 현장에서 대안교육이라는 것을 사뭇 편향적으로, 즉 특정하게 제한된 접근으로만 이해하는 경향에 대해서 다른 시간을 보이고자 했다.

  The purpose of this study is to explore the evolution, characteristics, and major issues in the fast expanding "alternative education" in Korea since the mid 1990s. In Korea, such alternative education has been mostly a practical education movement rather than an academic exercise. In this vein, this study is going to clarify the concept of alternative education through a theoretical investigation. Two distinctive practical modes are dealt with at this point. One is an alternative school beyond the public education system and the other is the one goes in and out of the public education structure. The researcher of this study focuses on some current debatable issues and tasks based upon each alternative education"s philosophical points and features implied in their course of their process of evolution. This historiographical study, the researcher attempts to present a different perspective from somewhat biased and limited approaches to alternative education in fields.
