This paper consider the self-consciousness of recent period intellectual in colony through Jin-Keon"s Hyun 3 early novels - The poor wife, A society offering liquor, The fallen. Hyun"s early trilogy question the specific daily life of recent period intellectual in colony who has mental conflict between Western Culture and Traditional Culture of "Cho-Sun(previous Korean name)" , i.e. between the modernity of Western-oriented and the distorted modernity of "Cho-Sun".
Hyun"s early trilogy make us investigate about the origin of our modernity. We consider that Western cultural traditions - Ancient"s Hellenism, Middle Ages" Christianity, Humanism of Renaissance and Recent"s Illuminism - are something substantial, but they are based on European Dualism which is divided everything as "subject vs object", "center vs outer", "civilization vs barbarism" etc.. These European Dualism emphasize own"s culture very much, so they implicit suppress the other cultures or human races. Therefore, the heros(heroins) in Hyun"s novel who serious worry and wonder between Western modernity and our specific modernity, desperate testify the dismal colonial reality.
These intellectuals who know the nature of Western, suffer pains because they should deny their mental existences which are based on Western illuminant rationality. These pains are overlapped with the scene in The fallen- the novel"s speaker sympathize with "a slender baby"s weak crying with the agony of pain because it is bitten by a harmful vermin" and gaze his own deep inside.
Through these process, Hyun"s heroes(heroins) who escape barely their own intellectuals" identity begin to transmit their inside for others.
The meanings of Hyun, Jin-Keon"s early novels are the self-reflection of Illuminism which are showed as a gorgeous hope, and the self-consciousness that replace modernity with abstract ideology as "real art". He gazes frankly the despairs of intellectuals who couldn"t surrender vulgar reality, and makes an issue the self-consciousness of intellectuals in daily life.
