A New Perspective on Diversity in Korea:
Hierarchical Complementarity of Age Diversity, Leader"s Diversity in Experience, Catalytic Transformation of Homogeneity through Emotional Acceptance
This paper intends to generate some propositions about diversity, which functions differently in Korean collective dynamics from the Western understanding of the concept. We argue that age diversity functions as a desirable axis of collective dynamics that promotes hierarchical complementarity, unlike the Western understanding that seniority order erodes collective dynamics. We also argue that the diversity of the personal vertical experience of the leader is an important factor in the acceleration of a team"s collective dynamics and performance, whereas the functional horizontal team, which increases horizontal functional diversity among members, represents the Western way of organizing teams. Finally, although mutual conflicts can converge into a consensus through negotiations and recognition in the West, explosive expansion of learning can occur in the East. These propositions can provide a new analytic apparatus for a proper understanding of Korean group dynamics.
