The purpose of this study is to reread the tragic aspects of Beyond the Horizon through Carl G. Jung"s concept of anima and animus. The anima which is feminine gender is just a figure that compensates the masculine consciousness. In a woman, the compensating figure is of a masculine character called the animus. To accept this anima and animus harmoniously in our life is the best goal we want to have and pursue. If not, our life will be tragic or discordant. Father plays an important role of the animus development process in a woman from her childhood.
In Beyond the Horizon, Luth, the central woman figure whose father died in her early childhood, experienced the suffering and confusion of choosing her husband or sexual partner because of the negative effect of her animus. Similarly, mother plays an important role of the anima development process in a man from his childhood. Robert also experienced the lack of ability and oversensitiveness because of his negative anima due to his mother"s excessive love. This negative effect of anima and animus leads to and heightens the tragic quality and closeness of Beyond the Horizon.
