An Analysis of Middle School English Textbooks and English Learning Web-sites Focusing on Blending On/Off-line Listening Activities

The purpose of this study was to explore effective ways to integrate on-line and off-line listening activities, both having their own unique characteristics to help students develop their listening skills in middle school English. The procedures and results of this study were as follows: First, six popular middle school English textbooks were chosen. The criteria were based on the achievement standards provided by the national middle school English curriculum and were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. With regard to frequency, ten English listening activities in the textbooks were chosen and analysed quantitatively. Second, eight English learning web-sites were selected. Among them, five of eight web-sites were run by each provincial office of education and their contents were well matched with the English listening achievement standards of middle schools. The rest of web-sites were for ESL. All web-sites were also analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, This research is a preliminary study for integrating on-line and off-line listening activities, therefore it is necessary to do further experimental studies as to how to adapt integrated on-line and off-line listening activities to real English classrooms in middle school.
