The purposes of this study are to review lexical aspects in English discourse, and to present the teaching methods of reading based on the lexical aspects. Lexical aspect is not concerned with relating the time of the situation to any other time-point, but rather with the internal constituency of the one situation. There are four lexical aspectual classes: state, activities, achievements, and accomplishments. It is argued that they can be distinguished by many features such as Change, Telicity, Duration, Control, and Causality, and the type of lexical aspects can be shifted by contextual information and explicit temporal adverbs. The study is based on an experiment in which subjects were tested on choosing mainline events and describing main ideas. Survey questionnaires composed of 5 test items were administered to 85 high school students. The results showed that students didn"t choose mainline events and describe main ideas in texts using lexical aspects effectively. Based on the findings, it is suggested that methods be included in teaching mainline events and main ideas of the texts.
