본 연구에서는 과학기술정책연구원이 발표한 KIS(Korean Innovation Survey) 자료를 활용하여 제조업과 서비스업에 있어서 기업의 기술혁신활동 결정요인을 비교ㆍ분석하였다. 기술혁신활동을 제품혁신과 공정혁신으로 구분하였으며, 기술혁신성과의 결정요인으로는 네트워크, 기업규모, 이윤율, 수출비율, 해외지분, 기업연령, 시장집중도, R&D활동 착수여부, 그리고 산업별 R&D집약도 등이 고려되었다. 분석된 표본은 제조업에 속한 1,128개 기업과 서비스업에 속한 1,289개 기업으로 정성적 분석방법인 로지스틱 회귀모형을 사용하였다. 분석결과, 예측대로 제조업과 서비스업에서 기술혁신활동의 결정요인이 다르게 분석되었다. 특히 제조기업의 경우에는 혁신성과의 유형에 따라서 기술혁신활동의 결정요인이 다른 것으로 분석되었으나, 서비스기업의 경우에는 제품혁신과 공정혁신에서 공히 그 결정요인이 동일하게 분석되었다. 다음으로 네트워크는 업종 및 혁신유형에 관계없이 기술혁신활동에 正(+)의 효과를 나타내었다. 즉 제조업과 서비스업에서 제품혁신 분야이든 공정혁신 분야이든 상관없이, 다른 기업 혹은 기관과의 공식적인 협력관계를 맺은 기업들이 기술혁신활동의 성과를 보고할 가능성이 높은 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 제조기업이든 서비스기업이든 기업의 기술혁신전략에서 타 기업 혹은 외부연관 기관과의 협력이 주요 성공요인임을 확인해 주었다. 한편 기업규모와 관련된 슘페터 가설은 제조기업에서는 공정혁신에 대해서만 성립하였고, 서비스기업에서는 제품혁신과 공정혁신에 대해서 모두 성립하였다.
The paper analyzes the determinants of firm"s innovative performance of manufacturing and service firms, using Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) 2002 and 2003 dataset, respectively. Product innovation and process innovation are used as proxies for innovative activity. The independent variables such as inter-firm network, firm size, lagged profit rate, foreign equity ratio, export ratio, firm"s age, market concentration ratio, R&D activity and industrial R&D intensity are also considered. With data from 1,128 firms in manufacturing sector and 1,289 firms in service sector, we estimated the logistic regression model. The empirical finding is that there are some differences in firm"s innovation determinants between manufacturing and service sector. We found that inter-firm networks have a strong positive effect on firm"s innovative activities, regardless of both innovation type and sector. Firm size also has a strong positive effect on process innovation in both sectors and product innovation in service sector, respectively. Lastly, we found that the innovative output depend on the level of technological opportunity by industry, especially in service sector.
