Firm growth is a search process of deleting obsolete knowledge bases while adding new ones. Using patent applications in the telecommunications industry from 1994 to 1998, I examine the way that a firm’s knowledge affects the scope of search in the external environments. The empirical results suggest that the scope of search increases with the accumulation of organizational knowledge at a decreasing rate, whereas it decreases with that of organizing experience, reflected in organizational age, at an increasing rate.
