A Study on Fairy Tale Educationusing Improvisation

&nbsp;&nbsp;Using different types of media in fairy tale education and direct activity helps children to widen their understanding and appreciation. When using not only language activities but also various methods including physical, musical and pictorial, children can bring out their subconscious imagination and chance to use that imagination since they can directly experience content of fairy tale. However, many fairy tale classes focus on understanding content mechanically rather than raising learner’s imagination and creativity which led to not enough understanding or appreciation. The reason for this is because the amount of time arranged for fairy tale education is insufficient to spend enough time and effort tomake children to understand and appreciate fairy tale. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to have teaching methods that can make children to understand and appreciate fairy tale thoroughly using given amount of time effectively.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This study was started with recognition of this problem. The purpose of this study is to find teaching method that can raise learner’s creativity and imagination in fairy tale education. It tried to design a fairy tale teaching method focusing on learner initiative activitiesusing improvisation, one of the educational theater techniques.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Educational theater is a way of teaching that is done through learner’s direct activity. Learners express their thoughts and feelings naturally in specific situation and can raise their imagination and creativity. Therefore, appreciating fairy tale using educational theater method stimulates learner’s aesthetic imagination, gives chance to share feelings of characters in fairy tale and raises insight into life through the learning process. Among various methods of educational theater, improvisation is a play consistsof improvisatory expression activities of participants. Creativeexpression based on variety of thoughts is the basis for fair tale education using improvisation which is very effective in raising variety of expressions and class participation.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This study adapted teaching method using improvisation to fairy tale class in the Korean textbook of Grade 3 and 4. First of all, this study looked into theories on fairy tale education and improvisation and relationship between fairy tale education and improvisation. This study set teaching principle of improvisation based on those theories as well as activities necessary for improvisation activities and fairy tale teaching for each level of studying that can be used in fairy tale education. Based on the preceding discussions, this study designed teaching-learning model using improvisation that can be adapted to Grade 3 and 4 fairy tale education and adapted four level teaching-learning model, ‘searching forming sharing internalization’.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In conclusion, fairy tale education using improvisation is significant because it can lead learner initiative activity. Learners can experience, feel and think content of fairy tale through improvisation. 21st century is a creative thinking focused era. Fairy tale education using improvisation that respect learners’various reacts can give learners an opportunity to think and experience fairy tale in various ways. Therefore, fairy tale education should be developed as education that can fulfill students’ intellectual desire as well as aesthetic imagination. Fairy tale teaching method using improvisation should be used to develop students’imagination and creativity in fairy tale education.
