이민공간에 대한 재미한인의 지각 - 한인이민문학을 중심으로

Korean-Americans" Perception of the Places of Immigration : Analysis of the Immigration Literature

  이민문학은 이민의 경험을 통해서 얻은 통찰력을 제시하고, 이민의 사회적 삶의 본질을 형상화함으로써 보편성을 지니며, 그것의 자서전적 특징은 이민을 계획하는 사람들에게 교훈을 준다. 이민문학의 이러한 특징을 전제로 이 연구는 재미한인 이민문학을 중심으로 그들이 이민 결정과정에서 지녔던 미국이라는 이민공간의 이미지, 이주 후 그곳에서 경험한 좌절과 실패, 이민공간에 대한 재인식, 극복과 적응, 그들의 정체감 등을 조사하여 재미한인 이민공간의 지각방식과 정착과정의 관계를 밝히는 데에 목적을 두었다. 이주 후 재미한인들은 생활고, 언어장벽, 인종차별, 소수민족 간 갈등, 가족해체 등으로 인한 좌절을 경험한다. 그들은 이민공간을 한계 상황으로 재인식하고, 인생의 목표를 수정하고, 자녀의 사회적 성공을 기대하며 그곳에 정착하고 있으나 대부분 한국과 미국을 오가는 경계인으로서 정체감을 가지고 있다.

  The immigration literature shows the experience and the insights of the immigrants. The biographical nature of the literature enables the potential immigrants to learn from the experience of others. This study analyzes the Korean-American immigration literature and investigates its elements such as the image of the United States prior to an immigration, the struggle and failures experienced after the immigration, the new perception of the places in which they settled, the process of overcoming the difficulties, and their perception of self-identity. By examining these elements, the study aims to clarify the way the immigrants perceive the space into which they immigrated and the relationship between such perception and the process of adaption. Korean-American immigrants often experience frustration due to the economic hardship, language barrier, racial discrimination, conflicts with other minorities, and family disintegration. In the process, they develop a new perception of the land they settled in, revise their life goals, raise their expectation for their children"s success, and struggle to deal with a strong sense of their border identity.
