The Centrality and Rank-size of Settlement in the South Gyeongsang Province in the Enlightenment Period

  한국 근대사의 격동기에 해당되는 개화기(1876~1910)는 35년에 불과한 짧은 기간임에도 불구하고 동학농민전쟁, 청일전쟁, 갑오개혁, 러일전쟁 등 역사적 대사건을 경험한 시대이다. 갑오개혁은 정부가 외국의 간섭을 배제하고 우리나라를 근대자주국가로 발돋움하기 위해 시도했던 역사적 대사건인바 , 경상남도는 국가차원의 근대화 사업이 가장 일찍, 그리고 조직적으로 시행된 지역이다. 이러한 개혁의 배경에는 경상남도가 중앙과 거리가 멀고 일본과는 가깝다는 점과 개항장인 부산과 마산을 교두보로 삼은 일본식민주의자들의 불법적 내륙 침투를 억제해야 하는 문제가 깔려 있었다. 그러나 정부의 개혁정책은 기대한 정도의 실효를 거두지 못하여 개화기말 부산을 중심으로 한 경상남도 동부지방은 委式近代化가 촉진된 반면 진주 중심의 서부경남은 근대화가 지체 되었다. 이와 같은 사실은 중심지의 기능과 지역구조에도 영향을 주어 경상남도를 식민지적 근대화가 이루어진 동부경남과 보수·전통적인 서부경남으로 구분시키는 결과를 초래하였다.

  The Enlightenment Period from 1876 to 1910 was a conversion period in Korean modern history. Despite of short term Korea had experienced such historical events as Donghak Peasants" Rebellion, Gabo Reform, Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. The royal government of Korea tried to reform its old systems of politics, military affairs, culture, education, economy and tax free from interventions of major powers. In these modernization project the South Gyeongsang Province as a model for other provinces because the royal government needed to control the Japanese economic penetration from the concession areas of Busan and Masan. The result of reform fell short of the government officials expectation and the Japanese colonialists expanded gradually their scope of activity to the inland of the South Gyeongsang Province. This fact produced undesirable things, i.e. the eastern part of this region occupied by the Japanese took the lead in modernization while the western part was overturned. Japanese colonialism had changed functions of central places and formation of regional system. It brought about striking contrast of regional system of modernization based on eastern colonial center and traditional and conservative west.
