&nbsp;&nbsp;최근 문화계에선 성에 대한 관심이 부각되고 있다. 다소 차이는 있겠지만 이런 현상은 성에 대한 우리의 기존 편견을 바꿔놓거나 정립하는데 일정한 기여를 하고 있다고 본다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;사방지는 세조 때 천노로서 여장을 하여 과부집에 출입한 인물이다. 이른바 여복을 한 남자가 사건의 발단이 된 우리나라 최초의 ‘바꿔 입기’-크로스 드레싱이다. 본고는 이 사건을 통해서 성에 관한 우리의 시각을 살펴보려 한다. ‘바꿔 입기’-크로스드레싱은 사회적 약자가 사회적 편견으로부터 자아실현을 위한 방편으로 이뤄지는 행위로, 사회체제나 인습에 대한 저항이라 볼 수 있다. 사방지 역시 사회적 약자인 종이었기에 여복남자로 행동한 자체가 이미 저항적일 수 있다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;그러나 이 사건은 사방지가 왜 여복남자가 되었는지에 맞춰져 있지 않고, 사건 중심을 兩儀에 맞춤으로써 진실을 왜곡하고 말았다. 그리고 그 사실이 지금까지 통용되고 있다는데 우리의 성의식에 대한 새로운 문젯거리를 제공한다고 볼 수 있다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;우리에게 있어 조선전기란 무수한 성담론들이 이미 패설문학에 수용되기 시작했고, 여성의 적극적 자아실현 의지가 고소설에서는 이미 발현된 것으로 나타나고 있지만, 여복을 한 남성의 성정체성은 강력한 윤리적 덕목에 부딪쳐 그 정체성은 고사하고 인격말살로까지 이어지고 말았다. 사방지에 대한 기록물은 남성이 여장을 하고 여성과 어울렸으니 인간이 아니라고 말한다. 그리고 양의를 지녔다고 말한다. 사방지의 성적 정체성보다 사회적 도덕률이 강조된 이때에 한 남성의 성을 두고 어떻게 이해했는지, 양의의 의미가 무엇인지 좀 더 깊이 살펴보고자 했다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Sex has recently become the center of public interest in the cultural society. It is believed, even if there is some difference, that this phenomenon plays, more or less, a role in changing the world&quot;s preoccupation of sex and reestablishing it.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The Sabangchi , a mean male servant in the age of King Sejo, was a frequent visitor to the widowed lady&quot;s residence wearing a female dress. Perhaps this is the first changing clothes, that is, cross-dressing in Korea in the respect that a man in woman&quot;s disguise became the origin of an affair.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, this study aims to investigate the Korean society&quot;s opinion of sex through this happening. It can be seen that cross-dressing is a kind of behavior as a means of self-realization of the weak against the social preoccupation as well as his resistance to social system and convention. As Sabangchi was a servant, the weak in the society, his disguise wearing women&quot;s dress itself is regarded as a kind of reluctance.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;However, the investigation of the happening didn&quot;t focus on why he disguised wearing women&quot;s dress, but on his hermaphroditism(so called, yang-eui), distorting the truth in fact. Moreover, since the influence has held true until now, the new issues of sex consciousness are made endlessly.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;It is well known that many sexual discourses began to appear in the indecently erotic literature early in the Chosun era and women&quot;s active will of self-realization was already manifested in the ancient fiction, but the sexual identity of a man in woman&quot;s disguise was confronted by a strongly ethical virtue and resulted in the obliteration of his personality to say nothing of his identity.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The record concerning Sabangchi reported that he couldn&quot;t be called a human, because he joined women wearing female&quot;s dress. In addition, it revealed that he had yang-eui . In this respect, this study attempts to observe how people understood a man&quot;s sex and what yang-eui meant in the time when the social morality was given priority over his sexual identity.
