In the prologue of Judgement House the author Suk-young Hwang said, "I consider objectivity and concreteness as the most important factors in describing things. I would like to present the situation as a scene rather than just describe yearning itself."
Spacial description has a great portion in Gaekji. Such spaces, the realities of life based on experience are reproduced by the characters" perception.
The reclaimed land where laborers work arduously for their survival, the town Unji where people reveal their emotions, and Doksan which is isolated after a strike are the main spaces in Gaekji. Through these spaces, the author is giving body to the characters" subconsciousness.
As most of the characters in Hwang"s novels are a marginalized minority in society, the characters in Gaekji are construction workers. They show their actual situations with their own characteristics.
The main characters in Gaekji are as following: level-headed Dong-hyeok who has a strong will to overcome his reality, Dae-wi who has a strong will to improve his reality, but is emotional, the supervisors who flatter the managing staff of the company and exploit the laborers, and Mr. Jang, a laborer who finds relief in his reality.
Through these characters, Hwang faces up to the contradictions of real life and dramatizes them.
