The purpose of this study is to examine implications of novels by Lee Sang in terms of the criticism of capitalism and modernity. For the purpose, this researcher reviewed all texts of the novels found so far and tried to carefully analyze relations between the text and the context of colonial modernity.<BR> The criticism of modernity by the novelist was in the form of that of capitalism. It can be summarized as follows. First, main characters appeared in novels by Lee Sang are all persons isolated from the world.<BR> Second, main characters appeared in the novels are all obsessed with the consciousness of death. Third, relationships with women described in the novels imply negation about the reality. Fourth, descriptions of the works have negative attitudes about money. Fifth, novels by Lee Sang show resistance to established traditions of modern descriptions by using odd and rare Chinese characters, ignoring word spacing and irregularly mixing objective and subjective descriptions.<BR> The study has its full significance in that it interprets in detail the texts of novel by Lee Sang.
