This study starts from doubting why the term ‘classical novel’ has been undoubtly used. The term ‘novel’ and its concept were created at the beginning of the modern times. In the antique East, the term of ‘novel’ was used to indicate works as a part of ‘history’ or ‘philosophy’. Thus, it is not reasonable to refer to stories written in the East before the modern times collectively as ‘novel’. Stories made before the modern times may be called ‘narratives’. ‘Narrative’ starts from ‘history’. ‘Historical narrative’ is derived from interpreted ‘history’ and then changed into a fiction. Of course, ‘historical narrative’ and ‘fictional narrative’ still coexist as two main axes of narrative. Historical factors are found in ‘fictional narrative’ like ‘historical narrative’ became a fiction. Samacheon’s 『Sagi』, 『Seohanyeoneui』, 『Yuakgwigam』 and 『Jangjabangjeon』 clearly suggest what difference exists between historical description and histor! ical narrative and how the latter was changed. 『Sagi』 is a historical narrative which dealt with history from different views other than a previous historical record, 『Chunchu』. 『eohanyeoneui』 is also a historical narrative which narrated the history of a nation in accordance with causal relations. 『Yuakgwigam』 is a historical narrative which put emphasis on theme and incident while, 『Jangjabangjeon』 is another work of the same genre which focused on heroic aspects of characters.
