The folklore of a stepmother killing a bridegroom in the bridal night was adapted into a transcript of Chosangwonjeon, printed classic novels Kimssiyeolhangrok and Samyungdangjeon and the early modern Korean novel Gueuisan by Haijo Lee. The tale can be summarized as this: The narrative structure of the folklore about the stepmother killing a bridegroom the bridal night is a dual quest starting with being a victim of false accusation and unfolding through the process of searching for information, collecting information, checking up facts, identifying, searching for information again, collecting information, checking up facts and returning. The first half consists of searching for identity by the bride and the second of searching for the grandfather by the bride’s son.
These type of folklores are divided into two groups, the one in which the gnight is killed, and the other in which the gnight is not killed. The former is adapted into the novels Chosangwonjeon, Kimssiyeolhangrok and Samyungdangjeon, the latter into Gueuisan.
The narrative structure of the folklore consists of the first search for identity by the bride and the second search for the grandfather, with the dual quest starting with being a victim of false accusation and unfolding through the before mentioned process. But the structure of Kimssiyeolhangrok is changed into two searches for identities by Mrs. Kim, the dual search starting with being a victim of false accusation and unfolding through the process of searching for information, collecting information, checking up facts, identifying, searching for information again, collecting information, checking up facts and identifying.
Haijo Lee adapted the folklore into the serial story in the newspaper with his literary attainments and awareness to be suitable for the phases and awareness of the times. But his novel still has the same double quest structure as the folklore does.
It is certain that part of the stepmother folklore was transmitted into the folklore in which Samyungdang’s motives to enter the Buddhist priesthood are described. Transmitted independently but influencing each other, the stepmother folklore and the Samyungdang folklore were integrated into the one story, becoming one of the old novels, Samyungdangjeon. During the process of readers conveying the story orally to other people, one of the motives for Samyungdang to enter the Buddhist priesthood might have been somehow connected with the folklore about the stepmother killing a bridegroom in the bridal night.
Finally, comparing the folklore with the novels, it is shown that the transcript Chosangwonjeon, Kimssiyeolhangrok, Gueuisan and Samyungdangjeon were adapted based on the original folklore in the chronological order of Chosangwonjeon, Gueuisan, Kimssiyeolhangrok, and Samyungdangjeon.
