I think that an image which is found in a poet"s poems repeatedly shows the relationship between the self and the world clearly. I examined the variety of water image in Kim Gu-yong"s poems in this thesis. Water image is divided into two symbols.
First, water represents the origin of life and it appears as the symbol of ‘headspring’ and ‘spring’ mainly. Kim searches for an absolute pleasure through Nature itself. This is made up of through the first person and visible world in the poem, Water whereas it is achieved through a rising toward superspace in the poem, headspring.
Second, water turns up this life and it is revealed through ‘sea’ mainly. Sea means not only human"s destination including creation and extinction but also the unique image through the combination of flower, bird and fish. This shows that Kim"s concern is fish, music, flower and bird and so on. I think that ‘flower’, ‘bird’ and ‘fish’ symbolize perfect world, resistive flight and transcendence by turns in his poems. Nature in Kim"s poems shows life itself and salvation. I know that the process of creation and extinction in sea of this world doesn"t end at a point of time but rotates tragedy since it cannot help repeating itself.
Water image in Kim"s poems starts from headspring and heads for sea and returns to river after all. It is a journey of seeking after truth for self redemption ultimately. This journey is composed of foundation of reality, not separation of reality. He shows that the pursuit for nature itself before Korean war, for resistance, rising and transcendence in 1950-1960 and for purification are connected with self(a man of character) and reality.
The key words of his poetical thought consist of the symbols of Buddhism and Taoism, so that they are difficult and even ideological. Also even though the poetic symbols are similar in his poems, they imply various meanings according to the characteristics of each poem. That"s why Kim"s poems are difficult to analyze. But I am sure that his poems contain the sublimity when the profound meanings are interpreted. Kim"s poems which were written from 1950s to 1980s leave room for studying from now on. Study of water image in my thesis is a part of the various research of Kim"s poems. When his poems are studied deeply and totally, they will take firm root in Korean poetic history.
