A Study on the Modernity of Discourse in Sinsoseol －Focused on the ‘Travel’ Motif－

&nbsp;&nbsp;This essay was projected for the purpose of verifying what is in the concrete the modern property of Sinsoseol as a discourse spoken and circulated in modern period. A travel motif was a kernel clue for beginning the project. Sinsoseol(new novel) is the modern literature characterized by the newness differed from a prior generation. It is just a main issue of the argument for examining the modernity of Sinsoseol that make clear the true characters of the newness. An extemporary and impulsive travel is distinctively repeated in Sinsoseol, the product of the modern period that is characterized by an absolute eagerness for the western new-civilization and a radical social transformation. This event was a visible index making Sinsoseol text differentiate from classic novels, because it was not apt to be discovered in them. The travel motif would be probably founded on the life condition making possible the intention and practice of the world travel and the absolute anxiety for seeing more of life those were difficult to be connected with the themes of prior novels. The travel motif in Sinsoseol was not only an episode unconsciously inserted by a few authors, but an inevitable result produced in the course of conforming to a rightness at that time. Therefore it was no doubt that the travel motif was a very important clue for grasping the true nature of Sinsoseol as a modern discourse.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This essay was constructed by three chapters. First of all, in chapter 2, I drew out various Sinsoseol texts included travel events and closely analyzed the aspects of narrating them. In chapter 3, I focused on what was a function or a role that a series of travel events, the travel motif, charged in texts, and what was the meaning that the travel really possessed. Chapter 4 was composed in the way of investigating the articles on newspapers at that time together with Sinsoseol texts. This method might be effective on showing us the context in that the significance of travel in text was spoken and circulated in that period. The examination connected Sinsoseol text with context at that time, would be necessary for solving the following interrogations; What is the meaning the action of travel in the period of being produced Sinsoseol has? What is the reason so frequently the travel motif is included in texts? Why is the travel motif constructed by all means in the way of being presented in Sinsoseol text?
