Communication and Aspects of Nonverbal Expressions

  Communication, culture and language cannot be separated. In other words, the successful communication between different cultures requires not only linguistic fluency but also cultural competence. Nonverbal expressions, which are deeply involved with the cultural dimension of language, is rarely taught in language class because such classes have almost exclusively focused on verbal expressions as the primary form of language. It is necessary for learners and teachers alike to be aware of the nonverbal cultural dimension of language for the effective communication. This study is an attempt to explore the nonverbal expressions that have generally been overlooked in the process of communicating. This study focuses on the patterns of nonverbal expressions as well as other studies related to this topic, and examples of nonlinguistic utterances represented in Korean textbooks are presented. Finally, based on this research, this paper suggests the necessity for teaching the nonverbal utterances and proposes an educational plan regarding this purpose.
