We report the recent discovery of 176 stone artifacts, including two hnndaxes (bifncial large cutting tools), which are preserved in the laterized sediments of terrace 4 of the Youjiang River at the Nanbanshan (NBS) locality of the Damei site in the Bose basin, south China. Their characteristics are similar to Paleolithic stone artifacts discovered from other sites in this basin. The handaxes, picks and other stone artifacts are associated with 155 tektite pieces found in the same horizontal layer. These fresh, unabraded and sharp-edged tektites were buried immediately after the airfall event. This provides further evidence that the Bose stone artifacts and the tektites were deposited simultaneously around 0.8 Ma. More stone artifacts were also unearthed above the tektite layer, indicating that early Humans in the area survived the event.
An Acheulean-like stone tool assemblage was reported in March 2000 from the Bose basin, where the stone artifacts are associated with tektites that are dated to 803,00±3000 years ago by⁴?Ar/³?Ar analysis. This discovery demonstrated similarities between East Asia and western stone tool assemblages, and can be considered a challenge to the Movies line theory. This discovery has spurred new research into the East Asian Paleolithic, as well as human behavioral responses to environmental changes. Some questions have also arisen about the dating of the Bose stone tools, which was established by association with the isotopically-dated tektites. In other parts of the world, such as Java, Indonesia, tektites are seldom found in situ. Handaxes are not typically found in situ in excavations in the Bose basin, but are usually surface find.
For this reason, the discovery of another site with the association of tektites and stone tools in primary context provides additional support to the date of these tools. We report here a newly discovered locality, NBS, at the Damei site in the Bose basin, and provide well-documented evidence about the above issues.
