동산 유인식의 계몽운동과 유교개혁론 - 정재 학파의 유교개혁론 연구(2)

  동산 유인식은 석주 이상룡, 해창 송기식과 함께 20세기 초반 국권상실기를 맞아 정재학파 내부에서 전개된 유교개혁론의 중심을 형성하는 인물이다. 정재학파는 영남학파 가운데 도통론적 사유에 가반을 둔 정통주의적 성향이 강했던 학파이다. 이런 점에서 유인식의 유교개혁론은 조선 유학에서 가장 보수적이었던 영남학파가 서세동점이라는 시대적 상황을 자기혁신을 통하여 능동적으로 대처해나가는 극적인 전환의 과정을 보여주는 하나의 시금석이다. 유교개혁에 대한 유인식의 열망은 일차적으로 자신이 직면했던 국권상실이라는 민족적 위기를 극복하고자 하는 실천적 관심의 결과이다. 약육강식의 논리가 지배하는 현실을 극복하가 위해 시급히 필요한 것은 힘을 기르는 것이며 또 그것을 위해서는 당시 ‘新學’으로 불렸던 서구의 학문과 제도를 습득하는 것이 급선무인데, 기존 유림의 수구적 의식은 이 과정에서 가장 큰 걸림돌로 작용하고 있으므로 시대를 창도해왔던 본연의 기능을 회복하가 위해서라도 유교는 혁신되어야 한다는 것이 그 주장의 핵심이다. 유교의 시대적 역할에 대한 유인식의 이라한 요청은 당연히 유교에 대한 비판적 애정을 전제로 한다. 하지만 그의 유교개혁론은 선언적 취지가 강하고 혁신을 위한 구체적인 프로그램에 대한 논의가 취약하다는 점에서 근본적인 한계를 지닌다.

  Dongsan Ryu In-sik was the key figure along with Seokju Lee Sang-ryong and Haechang Song Gi-sik to lead the Confucian Reform Theory which was developed within Jeongjae School in times of the loss of national sovereignty in the early 20th century. Jeongjae School was the strong orthodox based on "Dotong Theory(道統論), within Youngnam School. In this respect, the Confucian Reform Theory proclaimed by Ryu In-sik was a touchstone revealing the dramatic transformation of Youngnam School as the most conservative school in Confucianism of Chosun Dynasty while they actively coped with the transitional era of "Seose-Dongjeom(西勢東漸)" through self-reformation. Ryu In-sik was passionate about reforming Confucianism, for he was committed to overcome the national crisis of loosing the sovereignty more than anything else. In order to overcome the reality dominated by the social Darwinism doctrine, "survival of the fittest", empowerment of nation was urgently needed. In order to be empowered, the scholarship and system from the West, so-called Modern Science(新學), was to be studied first. However, the conservatism of the established Confucian scholars was the most serious obstacle in the course of pursuing the Modern Science. Thus, Ryu In-sik essentially called for the reformation of Confucianism so as to recover the original function of Confucianism that had led the nation and era. His claim concerning the role of Confucianism in the era was based on the critical affinity towards Confucianism. However, his Confucian Reform Theory had fundamental restrictions, for it was more of a declaration and less of a specific program to realize the declared reformation.
