『老子』의 儒家觀 再論 - 통행본과 곽점본을 중심으로

New Understanding on the Attitude toward Confucian thought in the Laozi

  본고는 孝, 仁, 禮 등 유가의 핵심 덕목을 통치방법과 도덕행위의 두 측면으로 구분하여 통행본과 곽점본『노자』의 유가관을 새롭게 검토한 것이다. 논자는 이 논문을 통하여 통행본과 곽점본의 입장이 전적으로 동일한 것은 아니지만 양자 모두 유가에 대해 重層的 태도를 보인다는 점을 밝히고 있다. 본고의 고찰에 의하면, 통행본이든 곽점본이든 통치방법으로서의 유가적 덕목에 대해서는 부정적 입장을, 도덕행위로서의 유가적 덕목에 대해서는 긍정적 입장을 보인다. 다만 통행본이 유가의 통치방법을 구체적으로 직접 거론하여 신랄한 비판을 가하고 있는데 반해, 곽점본은 통치방법으로서의 유가가 도가에 비해 저급한 것임을 지적하기도 하고 인위적 통치방법을 비판하기도 하지만 유가의 통치방법을 구체적으로 거론하여 비판하고 있지는 않다. 따라서 단지 통치방법에 대한 태도의 측면에서만 본다면, 곽점본보다는 통행본에서 그 적대적 성격이 분명히 드러난다고 할 수 있다. 본고의 결론을 바탕으로 할 때, 통행본『노자』의 철학적 특징이나 도가철학의 발전과정, 그리고 곽점본『노자』와 통행본『노자』의 관계 등에 대한 가존의 학설들은 상당 부분 수정이 불가피할 것으로 보인다.

  This paper re-examines the attitudes toward Confucian thought in Guodian Laozi and received Laozi through dividing the essential Confucian virtues such as filial piety (xiao, 孝), humanity (ren, 仁), and propriety (li, 禮) into two different aspects; the ways of government and moral behaviors. In this paper, I argue that the Guodian Laozi and the received Laozi show opposite attitudes toward the two different aspects of Confucian virtues. According to this research, the received Laozi and the Guodian Laozi both have a negative attitude toward Confucian virtues as the ways of government, but have a positive attitude toward them as moral behaviors. However, while the received Laozi straightforwardly criticizes the concrete ways of Confucian government, the Guodian Laozi does not. Even though the Guodian Laozi insists that the ways of Confucian government are inferior to the way of Dao, and criticizes the artificial ways of government, it is not as straightforward as the received Laozi. Therefore, in the aspect of the way of government, the hostile relationship between the thought of Laozi and Confucian thought is clearer in the received Laozi than in the Guodian Laozi. Based on this conclusion, we should reconsider the popular ideas about the philosophical characteristics of the received Laozi, the process of development of Daoism, and the relationship between the Guodian Laozi and the received Laozi.
