브렌트 윌슨의 미술교육 사상과 시각문화 연구

Brent Wilson"s Contribution to Art Education

  현대 미술교육에 지대한 영향을 끼친 브렌트 윌슨(Brent Wilson)의 미술교육사상의 철학적 기반, 시각적 텍스트로서의 미술교육과 아동화 연구, 시각문화 연구와 시사점으로 나누어 살펴보겠다. 윌슨은 광범위한 인문학적 지식과 철학적 관심 그리고 포스트모더니즘을 바탕으로 시각적 텍스트로서의 미술교육과 아동화 연구에 문화적 영향을 중시한다. 그는 DBAE가 학생들의 삶과 관심의 문제를 담는데 한계가 있다고 보고 현대미술과 대중매체를 포함하는 리좀(rhizome)과 같은 무수히 많은 기호학적 연결고리로 연결된 시각문화 연구를 중심으로 하는 현대 미술교육을 전망하였다.

  Brent Wilson"s study on child"s art helps frame the recent shift toward visual culture as a revisioned movement. He presented the innovative view of how children learn to draw and the cultural influences of their choices. This article describes his research and its sources. Theories, philosophies, intellectual climate are the first classification to help art educational research. Wilson draws upon postmodern theories and interdisciplinary studies. Wilson continued to challenge art education field with research about popular culture and their influences on child art. He explored the role of popular culture in contemporary society while problematizing developmental theories including Lowenfeld prevalent in the field in 1970s. Wilson argued that art education should enable students to interpret and create artworks in term of solving problems in their life. His cross-cultural research on Japanese young people"s manga, dojinshi, and comic market provides a set of tools toward critical pedagogy to help students to investigate the intertextual site in visual culture outside schooling. A review placed his major writing in the context of art education with implications for future research in art education.
