백제ㆍ신라 마애불의 조형성 연구

Research on the Plastic Character in the Rock-cut Buddhist Sculptures of the Baekje and Silla Dynasties

  마애불은 전국 곳곳의 화강암 절벽에 조각한 불상으로 매우 견고하여 한번 조성되어지면 오랫동안 변함없는 모습으로 예경의 대상이 되고 있다. 마애불은 천연의 바위 면에 고부조에서 중부조, 저부조, 선각에 이르기 까지 다양한 표현기법으로 조성되었다. 백제와 신라 마애불은 고대 우리 조각의 원류로서 이후 조각사에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 백제 마애불과 신라 마애불의 조형성은 차이점보다 공통점이 많이 가지고 있는데, 그 공통점은 자연주의 기조 아래 균제된 사실주의를 보이면서 절제되고 함축적인 표현을 하고 있다. 또한 마애불의 표현은 얼굴 중심의 정면성 표현이 강조되고 있으며, 도상의 구성은 비대칭이며 회화성이 강하다. 또한 선, 면, 양감, 공간 등 여러 조형요소를 아우르면서 절제된 양감과 면 그리고 선적인 표현을 하고 있다. 양국 마애불의 차이점은 백제는 구체적 인체 표현을 능숙하게 구사하는 가운데 사실성이 강하고 보다 인간적인 표현을 하는 반면 신라 마애불은 비사실적이면서 경직한 가운데 추상성과 정신성을 강조한다는 것이다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The rock-cut Buddhist sculptures, carved in relief on vertical cliffs of granite, are so solid that have nearly been damaged since built once and have regarded as a monumental statue of Buddha for worship so long in Korea. They were created by various techniques from high relief, middle relief and low relief, till linear relief. In Baekje and Silla, the rock-cut Buddhist sculptures have particularly influenced in the history of sculpture in Korea as its origin.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The spirit and features of plastic arts in the rock-cut Buddhist sculptures have more similarities than differences between the Baekje and Silla dynasties. It can be found the similarities in the expressive style with great restraint and implication, revealing symmetrical realism based on naturalism. In the way of expression, they focus on frontality centralizing Buddhist&quot;s face; their composition is asymmetric and quite pictorial; it used with restraint in its volume, surface and linear expression, including various plastic elements, line, side, mass, and space, etc. On the other hand, it is the differences between the two dynasties that, while the Baekje&quot;s shows realistic and humanistic aspects depicting perfectly embodied body figures, the Silla&quot;s emphases on abstractivity and spirituality on the unrealistic and stiff aspects.
