A Study on the Style of "Melancholy and Ups and downs(沈鬱頓挫)" in Dufu"s Poem “Travel to North(北征)”

  “Travel to North(北征)”of Dufu(杜甫) is the longest five-character old style poem composed in 757, when he had visited his family in Fuzhou(？州) from the provisional government in Fengxiang(鳳翔) where he served as a remonstrant. We can say that Dufu represented mixed and complicated feelings in this poem more than any others. It was likely that he was anxious about the safety of his family as well as his country after the outbreak of An Lu-shan(安祿山)"s rebellion. As he was so confused by the failure of remonstrance to Suzong(肅宗) about the matter of personnel management in connection with Fangguan(房琯) that he could not do anything except visiting his family at that time, but his mind was still uneasy all the time because of seeing horrible spectacles after the battle. This ？？feeling of crisis？？ made the poem have strong sense of "melancholy(沈鬱)‘ and "ups and downs(頓挫)’. They were mainly created by the collision between strict political arguments and intense poetic lyricism. We can conclude that the stylistic characteristics of Dufu"s poetry has developed from the poem “Travel to North(北征)”.
