The retail system can be changed by distribution companies" attempts to adjust it to environmental changes. We are about to experience a revolution in distribution due to changes in environmental factors such as rapid development of information and communication technologies.
The second distribution revolution, which is of equal importance to the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century has already taken off. A shift of the paradigm in distribution and marketing is, therefore, necessary. The network computing society, which enables us to access and purchase goods and service information from anywhere and at any time, brings about a prosumer sense of values, and results in a consumer-led type of distribution system.
Core technologies which affects the distribution industry include ( i ) Radio Frequency Identification tags, (ii) Web Services, (iii)network household electronics appliances, SCM ( management technical & SW packages), and (ix) IPv6.
Changes in the history of the distribution system of Japan can be arranged as follows : (i) wholesale store-led type of distribution system (Edo era), (ii) maker-led type of distribution system (the 1950s), (iii) retail-led type of distribution system (1960s to the present), and (ix) consumer-led type of distribution system (near future).
Network computing technology brings about a fundamental reformation of the distribution system. The consumer will have access to various kinds of information by Internet. The consumer will also influence the production of goods or services, distribution transactions, purchase conditions, etc. against the background of information technology revolution.
