Order of Discontinuous Constituents in English

Order of Discontinuous Constituents in English

It is well known that relative clauses in some contexts can be extraposed to the right periphery of the sentence. For example, phrasal and clausal relatives to the head nouns that contain indefinite article can be extraposed for various functional and other reasons, thereby inducing non-canonical word order among constituents. In addition, some conjuncts in English are inherently discontinuous. For example, the result clause consisting of so.... that does show that the head so and the subordinate conjunct that are separated. In this paper, I try to pin out what kind of syntactic and/or pragmatic conditions regulate the relative order between discontinuous constituents. In particular, I will argue (ⅰ) that any complements (to be defined later) may be more closely related to the heads than adjuncts and (ⅱ) that the head-complement or head-adjunct relationship (expressed by connecting lines) should be nested, rather than crossed. In so doing, I will analyze various discontinuous constituents such as comparatives, relatives, and complex adjunct clauses.
