This paper explores the question on what mechanism operates on L2 syntactic development and how we can extend Vainikka and Young-Scholten"s Syntactic Sequence (Vainikka & Young-Scholten, 1994, 1996, 1998) to double or multiple CP structures. For these questions, this study devises Markedness on Operations, quantifying the degrees of syntactic operations as the result of the operations of the force-realizing mechanism, according to which the developmental stages of double CP structures can be decomposed into a number of discrete stages. On these, this study proposes a revised syntactic developmental sequence of V-VP-IP-FocP-CPs (SDS). Also, this study has attempted to show that each stage of the SDS can be explained on the IL data either from sequence-based second language acquisition research or from the utterances produced by L2 learners. In conclusion, going beyond the limitations of Vainikka and Young-Scholten"s Sequence, the SDS can determine the syntactic IL developmental sequence for double or multiple CP structures.
