The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of the high school English classes. In order to find out what goes on in the high school English classes, the study first analyzed six video-taped classes taught by six teachers in six schools, and then administered two questionnaire surveys in order to examine the teachers’ and the students’ opinions and attitudes about their English classes. Both the 87 teacher participants and the 694 student participants were from ten high schools in four different school districts in a metropolitan city in Korea. The findings show that the high school English classes as currently practiced fail to achieve enough effectiveness and that one main reason for this failure is lack of appropriate teacher techniques. Based on the findings, the study concludes that despite the difficulties arising from the various constraints inherent in the Korean context, the high school English classes can still be improved to a great extent by the teachers’ appropriate techniques that are more sensitive to the students’ needs and interests. Suggestions are made to help the teachers develop insights into a more effective class.
