Characteristics of New Zealand English and Maori English

  This study explores the characteristics of New Zealand English, the aboriginal language Maori, and Maorie English. After briefly explaining the historical and social background of New Zealand, this paper discusses major features of sound system, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary in New Zealand English with reference to the RP (Received Pronunciation) and Australian English. The paper then investigates the distinctive features of Maori and Maori English with focus on its pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. By exploring the similarities and differences between/among New Zealand English, RP, Australian English, and Maori English, this study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic nature of a global language, English, and to be utilized in English education and the cross-cultural communication in a global society.
