This paper concerns the Buljeon Eonhae(佛典諺解) works that had been published since the creation(1446.A.D) of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音). The investigation results tell that the efforts to read and write Buljeon in Korean started as early as the seventh century, when, however, they had to borrow Chinese characters(漢字) to indicate the auxiliary words and endings of words since they didn"t have their unique medium to mark their language. That kind of marking is called borrowing transcription(借用表記).
The way they read Buljeon by adding Gugyeol provided the basis for Buljeon Eonhae(佛典諺解), which was a peculiar translation style, since the appearance of Hunminjeongeum. That resulted in the active translation and publication of the many Buljeon from King Sejong to Sejo, which opened the era of Eonhae Buljeon. Whatever the objective of Hangeulization of the Buljeon was, the Buljeon Eonhae works followed fairly stringent procedures as well as succeeded the traditions from the previous years. Most of the Buljeon Eonhae works kept a distance, however, from people"s everyday talks being in the manner of literal translation except for a few works like Seokbosangjeol(釋譜詳節) that were in the manner of free translation. Even though there was no denying that Eonhae was established as a unique translation style of the days, its restrictions couldn"t be disposed of including too many Chinese characters and too obvious atmosphere of translation. It"s still a big question how the general public or Buddhists made use of Eonhae when it was accompanied by Hunminjeongeum.
The major discussions were argued as follows;
1. The relationships between the Gugyeol Buljeon before Hunminjeongeum and the Eonhae Buljeon after its appearance.
2. What aspects did translation take right after Hunminjeongeum, and what style was Eonhae referred to?
3. The system of Gangyongdogam that led the movement toward Buljeon Eonhae and the process of Buljeon Eonhae.
4. Verifying the succession of the traditions of Gugyeol Buljeon and Eonhae Buljeon by using examples.
5. Investigating the limitations and problems of Eonhae Buljeon by comparing Eonhae Buljeon and Chinese scriptures in terms of their modern translations.
