Inter-exchange between Korea and Japan which was started after the opening a port in Korea in 1876 was one-sided activity of Japan that had a political intention. The Japanese government plotted penetration to Korea at that time. It also exhorted propagation in various sects of Japanese Buddhism to fit a national purpose in order to facilitate their plan. Japanese Buddhism was planned not only for national advantages but also religious advantages.
Korean Buddhism was heavily influenced by Japanese Buddhism and therefore could not help consistently relying on the Japanese, as it was incapable of being independent. Korean policy which was carried out by a matter of national policy, imitated Japanese Buddhism.
And also there was a strong tendency to rely on Japanese Buddhism by enlightened Buddhist priest and monk"s, who hoped to create a new era and set up a religious order in Korean Buddhism.
This sort of exchange extremely exposed Korean Buddhism"s lack of subjective capability. As a result, Korean Buddhism which was unable to renovate itself, was unintentionally dragged into the Japanese Buddhism policy.
