There are several versions of The Platform Sutra. The version compiled by Te-i (德異), a Buddhist monk of Y¨ uan (元), was translated into Korean by Hakjo (學祖) who was a Buddhist monk under the reign of King Yeonsan (燕山君) of the Joseon Dynasty. It is called the Eonhae edition (諺解本). Queen Insu (仁粹王妃) defrayed the expense of its publication. It was published in three volumes. A special wooden printing type was made for the publication of the sutra.<BR> The purpose of this study is to discover some philological and linguistic characteristics of the Korean translation of The Platform Sutra. The publication project of Korean translations of Buddhist texts in 15th century is reviewed, and some characteristic features of the Korean language at that time are revealed through analyses of the Korean translation of The Platform Sutra.
