The Modern and Anti-modern in Zhang-taiyan"s Buddhist studies

  Zhang-taiyan make an attempt to social revolution by buddhist studies. He try to break down the feudal social system, and fight against the capitalistic modern society. Therefor his buddhist studies contain the double strategy of modern and anti-modern. The most important idea of this strategy is "the individual". He emphasize the value of individual against the collectivized value. The emphasis of individual is an attack on a feudal servile spirit. Also, It is a criticism at the modern universality and development view. Zhang-taiyan strongly repudiates collectivization. Modern universality converge person into the modern nation state. He deconstruct an modern universality with buddhist theory. It is a new possibility of buddhism in modern china.
