영재와 영재교육에 대한 담론 - 영재교육 그 안이 궁금하다?

A discourse on the giftedness and gifted education

  영재교육은 21세기 교육의 새로운 관심영역으로 부상하고 있고 수 백 억원이라는 실로 막대한 예산이 과학기술부와 교육인적자원부로부터 영재교육 관련 사업에 지원되고 있다. 그렇다고 하면 영재교육은 기존 학교 교육과 차별화된 프로그램을 제공하고 있으며 어떠한 내용과 형태로 차별화되어 있는가? 인간과 교육에 대한 영재교육의 관점은 어떠하며 영재교육에서 제시하는 차별화된 프로그램은 의도한 바와 같이 그들의 잠재 능력을 개발하는 데 적합하게 이루어지고 있는가? 영재교육이라는 이름 하에 교육받고 있는 학생들이나 교육시키고 (하고) 있는 교사들이 인식하는 영재와 영재교육의 의미는 어떠한가? 영재교육이 실제로 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 그 안을 들여다보는 것은 영재교육의 올바른 방향설정을 위해 실로 중요한 작업이다. 사실 전국 대부분의 영재교육기관이 베일에 싸여져 있다 해도 과언이 아니다. 그곳에서의 교육내용, 수업방식, 가르치는 사람과 배우는 사람들의 생각과 의견은 거의 공개되고 있지 않아 때로는 지나친 기대를 때로는 오해를 불러일으키고 있다. 특히 질적인 접근을 통하여 그 내면의 실상을 면밀히 탐색해 보려는 시도는 거의 전무하다. 이에 본 연구는 한국이란 사회에서 다양한 모습과 형태로 펼쳐지고 있는 영재교육의 내부를 심층적으로 들여다봄으로써 과연 영재와 영재교육은 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있는가를 알아보았다. 이 연구를 위해 영재교육이 가장 활발하게 이루어진다고 평가되는 A 영재교육기관의 10명의 교수를 인터뷰했고 50명의 학생들을 심층 인터뷰했다.

  Gifted education is certainly one of the hottest issues in Korea. Much money and effort are being investigated in this area of education. Recent announcement of Korean Ministry of Education does state that all children should be educated to the level of which they are capable, and the current gifted program should and will be extended. However, there is so little effort to peek into the inside of gifted education. What is happening in the name of gifted education? What is the meaning of giftedness and gifted education? How and in what aspects the gifted program is differentiated with general programs? What are the problems and concerns in serving gifted students? What are the effects of gifted programs? How the teachers and students feel and tell about gifted programs? These are the main questions of the present qualitative study. For this ethnographic study, A science gifted education center was observed for six month period, and 10 professors and 50 students were interviewed in depth.
