The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a communication system providing new augmentative communication technology to patients with neuromuscular impairments. The BCI system will "bypass" the damaged motor pathway of a paralyzed individual by interfacing his motor cortex directly with a computer. In this paper, we report a preliminary result of the development of BCI system using visual responses of motor potentials (MP s) achieved in our laboratory. This work includes the design and construction of a BCI system for the measurement and recording the MP s under the visual stimulation generated from a moving target, and the analysis of the relationships between the recorded MP s and the motion of the moving target. The analytical results say that the moving direction of a target can be directly recognized by computer based on the generated MP s from the visual stimulation. Because of the good signal-to-noise ratio of the visual MP s, the visual MP s based BCI method enable a higher communication speed than that of other BCI methods. The applications of the visual MP s based communication are also discussed.
