&nbsp;&nbsp;최근에 발생한 말레이시아 사회의 급격한 변화 중의 하나는 말레이 민족정체성의 확립을 위한 정부의 다각적인 시도라고 할 수 있다. 말레이인의 독자적인 민족정체성을 확립하고자 하는 시도는 주로 일상생활의 규범을 제공하는 이슬람과 관련된 문화적 형태들을 매개로 이루어진다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;따라서 이 끌에서의 말레이 민족정체성에 대한 관심은 이슬람이라는 종교적 요소가 어떠한 상황에서 민족정체성으로 전환하는가라는 질문에 기초하고 있다. 일반적으로 민족성(ethnicity) 혹은 민족정체성(ethnic identity)에 관한 기존의 사회학적, 인류학적 논의는 크게 ‘근원주의(primordialism)’와 ‘상황주의(circumstantialism)’에 입각하여 전개되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 말레이 민족정체성의 형성과 변화에 있어 근원적인 요소와 상황적 요소를 모두 고려한다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;저자는 근원주의적 시각과 상황주의적 시각을 종합하여 민족정체성을 규정하는 근원적 요소가 특정의 사회경제적 상황하에서 문화적 형태를 매개로 하여 민족정체성과 관련된다고 보고 있다. 이 논문은 이같은 이론적 배경하에서 우선 말레이 민족정체성의 구성적 성격을 분석하고 있다. 그리고 나서 현대 말레이시아의 지배적 이념으로 자리잡고 있는 이슬람의 종교행위와 이슬람재생운동 그리고 최근 급속히 발전하고 있는 관광산업에 대한 사례연구를 통해 그 문화적 의미를 살펴보고 있다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;결론적으로 현대 말레이시아 사회에서 말레이 민족정체성은 말레이인만이 가질 수 있는 감정적 유대와 결속이 이슬람을 비롯한 문화적 형태의 상징화를 통해서 배타적인 집단적 利害와 독특한 방식으로 결합한 형태를 취하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이런 방식에 의해 다른 민족집단의 정체성과 구분되는 말레이 민족정체성은 앞으로 정치적, 경제적, 사회적, 문화적 상황의 변화에 따라 자기 집단이익을 극대화하기 위해 다양한 문화적 자원을 이용한 이미지 창출을 지속할 것으로 전망된다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Debates on the nature of ethnicity or ethnic identity have been engaged by scholars of two distinct theoretical orientations: ‘primordialism’ and ‘circumstantialism’. This paper attempts to overcome the weakness of both approaches and to suggest an alternative one, that is, to analyse the processes in which conflicting ethnic groups utilize political, economic and cultural resources to enhance their group interests against others.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;From this viewpoint, the writer explains the formation and change of Malay ethnic identity in the context of contemporary Malay society. Firstly, he explains what constitutes the Malay ethnic identity. Secondly, he explains how Islamic rituals observed by the Malays are related to the Malay ethnic identity. Thirdly, he investgates in what contexts, and why Islamic revival movement and the ‘creation’ of the image of traditional Malay culture, have recently occurred when the Malay society has experienced the rapid economic development and urbanization.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The writer concludes that these phenomena are first of all the symptoms and mechanisms of the formation of distinct ethnic identity of the Malay who want to differentiate them from other ethnic groups in Malaysia and, thus, achieve a dominant position politically and economically.
