Examining Accuracy of the Travel Time Forecast with AVI Data

  This study examines if the travel time information service using AVI(Automatic Vehicle Identification) is more accurate compared to the conventional travel time forecasts with traffic velocity data from vehicle detectors, in order to increase the accuracy of the travel time forecasting system. First, we review the factors of errors that occur in travel time forecasting and theoretically discuss advantages of AVI data. Second, we compare travel time forecast performances of vehicle detector data and AVI data that were obtained at a major arterial road. Both the theoretical discussion and real data analysis indicate that the travel time estimation using AVI data shows a higher accuracy than the one based on the vehicle detector data.
