Causes of Online-Violence and Its Prevention

  This study tests the effect of several explanatory factors on youth"s violence on cyber-spaces. This study examines the effects of several factors(eg, anonymity, perceived certainty of punishment, internet using time, group identity, the perception of cyber culture, attitudes toward online violences, the perceived fun of online violence, self-esteem, parental and school strains, and low self-control). Using data from 1113 middle and high school student in Seoul, 2003, this study reveals that the perception of cyber culture, attitudes toward online violences, and internet using time have large effects in explaining online violence. In addition, anonymity, low self-control, the perceived punishment have also significant effects. Results imply that socio-cultural strategies, ethic education, and other citizen"s participation for the crime prevention would be more effective than other legal or institutional strategies. The policy implications of those results are discussed.
