A Comparative Study on Children"s Power of Linguistic Expression according to Their Experience in Fairy Tale Activities (Reading, Narrating, and Dramatizing) - Focusing on journal writing activities utilizing fairy tales -

  The objective of this study was to compare the effects of children"s experiences in fairy tale activities of reading, narrating and dramatizing on their power of linguistic expression. The subjects of this study were 48 five-year old children (23 boys and 25 girls) attending H Kindergarten in Osan-City, Gyeonggi-do. The experiment was designed according to the Latin square design. Nine fairy tales were used in the study, and all of reading activity, narrating activity and dramatizing activity were compositely applied to all the 48 children. Children"s power of linguistic expression was measured through "the activity of writing words coming to the memory" and "the activity of creating stories" as parts of journal writing activities utilizing fairy tales. One-way ANOVA, t-test, and paired t-test were used for data analysis. The results of this study were as follows: A significant difference was found in children"s power of linguistic expression according to experiences in fairy tale activities. Children"s power of linguistic expression was higher when they experienced dramatizing activities than when they experienced reading or narrating activities. The study suggests that fairy tale activity methods must be chosen according to the goal of education and that children must be continuously guided into active journal writing activities.
