A study of relationship between participation motivation in sports and sex or gender of adolescents

  The purpose of this research was to specify differences in participation motive in sports according to sex or gender of middle school boys and girls, so the young can better understand and participate in sports, seeking ways to let them take part in sports positively. Furthermore, it was conducted to provide a basic, helpful data for leaders and managers in charge of sports in the field. Survey was conducted for 250 middle school boys and 250 middle school girls, totaling 500 students of "D" middle school, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Korea. Setting aside the data with "no response" and "repetitious response" which are regarded to be low in reliability, a total of 474 data (236 for boys and 238 for girls) was used for the actual analysis. The data collected through this method was used for analysis of elements, and verification of reliability and feasibility to verify the hypothesis set for the research, and then the descriptive statistics was implemented to grasp the characteristics of the data. Besides, t-test verification was used to grasp participation motives in sports according to sex or gender of adolescents. Summarizing findings of hypothesis verifications through a series of statistical analysis, this research reaches its conclusion as follows : Sex or Gender-based participation motive in sports of middle school boys and girls has shown that middle school boys took more interest than middle school girls in elements like technological development, self-satisfaction, showoff for outward appearance, health and physical strength, and social gathering.
