보조국사 지눌은 한국불교 근 현대에도 많은 영향을 주었다. 이 시기 계승된 보조의 사상 가운데 두드러진 것은 결사의 정신이다. 그런 정신은 경허와 한암에 의해 계승되었으며, 현대에는 재가 불자들에 의해서도 계승되었다.<BR> 보조의 사상은 한국불교 선종의 근간을 정립하는 데 많은 영향을 주었다. 근대불교 연구자들은 한국불교 선종이 그의 사상을 계승하고 있음을 밝힘으로써 보조를 중심으로 역사적 의의를 정리하였다. 또한 근대부터 현대에 이르기까지 한국불교의 선가에서 중요하게 여겼던 전적에서 보조의 저술은 강조되었다.<BR> 이런 보조사상은 현대 한국불교학에도 많은 영향을 주었다. 전문적인 보조 연구자가 배출되어 보조에 관한 깊은 연구 성과를 축적하였다. 그리고 이들의 연구에 의해 한국 현대불교에 있어 보조의 영향이 매우 컸음이 증명되었다.<BR> 또한 보조의 실천이 이어져 온 송광사에서 근 현대의 선지식인 효봉과 구산이 보조의 선사상을 계승함으로써 승보종찰의 이미지는 물론 가풍의 계승이라는 의의를 회복할 수 있었음도 역사적 영향의 중요한 부분이다.<BR> 따라서 이런 점을 종합해서 고찰할 때 근 현대 보조사상의 역사적 영향은 한국불교 전체에 정체성을 확립하는데 큰 족적을 남겼고, 앞으로 다가올 미래의 한국불교에 선명한 방향을 제시하였다고 평가될 수 있다.
