The current study suggests that there are two types of signification modes in linguistic signs: one is the mode of symbolization and the other, the mode of indexicalization, After introducing the brief definition of the two modes, the study focuses on the “indexical symbols”, which are signs that function both as a symbol and as an index. They are phenomena that have been referred to as allomorphy and allophony. In this article, allomoprhs, for example, are considered as signs sharing a certain symbolic content, but indexing their respective distributional statement. This interpretation from the decoding perspective finds its counterpart in the encoding process. A linguistic content may be encoded symbolically and indexically. This means that a context where a linguistic unit takes place is positively construed as a “meaning,” to which the unit indexes.
