A study on the Byeon Jong-un"s prose

&nbsp;&nbsp;변종운은 19세기 전반기에 譯官으로 文名을 떨쳤던 인물이다. 「柳？傳」이나 「李敬亭墓碣銘」을 통해 볼 때, 그는 관료사회의 부조리에 대해 잘 인식하고 있었으나 적극적인 비판은 하지 않았다. 그보다는 자기심신을 수양하는 쪽을 선호하였다. 이를 두고 보수적이라 평가할 수도 있겠으나, 다른 글들을 볼 때 그의 사유는 규범적인 데 매어있지 않았다. 재능이라는 내적 자질과 신분이라는 외적 표지의 불일치를 경험했기 때문인지 그의 문집에는 내적 진실을 탐구하는 글들이 많다. 知己에 대한 갈망은 그의 원망을 보여준다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;내적 진실에 대한 탐구를 보면, 표면적인 사실에 근거한 일반적인 견해를 뒤집는 경우가 있고, 역사서에 기록되지 않은 맥락에 대해서 상상력으로 재구하는 경우도 있다. 앞의 경우로는 「長城說」 등이 있고, 뒤의 경우로는 「？？河說」, 「審象求弼辯」 등이 있다. 「郭巨埋兒辯」의 경우는 역사적 사실이 와전되었을 것이라며 진실을 재구하는 모습까지 보인다. 이러한 자유로운 사유는 장자 의 幻을 포용하는 언급과 긴밀하게 관련되며, 환을 긍정하기 때문에 또한 서사적 형상화를 자주펼쳐 보일 수 있었다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;소설적 성격이 강한 「角？少年傳」의 경우 虞初新志의 「秦淮健兒傳」과 유사한데, 인물 구성에서 대결 구도를 좀 더 선명하게 만들어 긴장미를 강화하였다. 送序에서도 전해오는 이야기를 흥미 있게 서술하는 등 형상화 방식이 여러 문체에서 사용되고 있다. 이렇게 서사와 묘사를 자유롭게 구사할 수 있었던 것 역시 幻을 긍정하는 사유와 관련이 있다. 소재의 산문이 갖는 흥미로움은 幻을 긍정할 수 있었던 자유로운 상상력에 기인하는 것이다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Byeon Jong-un, a interpreter, was one of the most famous literary men as Jung-in(中人) in the early 19th century. He was aware of bureaucratic irregularities, but preferred cultivating his mind to assuming a critical attitude. So we may judge him conservative, but his way of thinking was not fettered by social customs. He wrote many writings inquiring into inner truthfulness because he had experienced the conflict between inner ability as his talent for writing and his external limit, distinction of classes. His longing for an intimate friend(知己) is from this resentment.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In his search for inner truthfulness, there are two cases. One is to overthrow the popular opinion based on the external facts, and the other is to recompose the context not recorded in history books. We can see the former in ？Jangsung seol(長城說)？ etc, and the latter in ？Hotaha seol (？？河說)？ and ？Simsang-gupil beon(審象求弼辯)？ etc. In 「Guakgu-maear beon(郭巨埋兒辯)」, he even reconstructed the historical truth because he considered some historical facts false. This liberal mind is closely related to the reference to the fantasy(幻) in Chuang-tzu(莊子) . He often used imagination in writings because he recognized the fantasy(幻).<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;「Gakjeo-soneon jeon(角？少年傳)」 shows a strong tendency of novel. It is similar to ？Jinhoe-geonar jeon(秦淮健兒傳)？ in Oocho-sinji(虞初新志) , but makes the story tense by using conflict among characters. In Songseo (送序) he wrote hearsay in this interesting way. What made his description vivid is related with his liberal mind to recognize the fantasy(幻). Most interest of his prose is based on this liberal mind.
