A Study of An Illusion of Pisaeng

&nbsp;&nbsp;17세기 초반 창작된 「피생명몽록」은 임진왜란 직후 여주 사는 피생이라는 선비가 이천 원적산 아래에서 서울선비 이헌과 역리 김검손의 혼백을 만나 대화를 나눈다는 내용이다. 피생은 이헌의 아들 이극신이 이헌이 죽은 지 10년도 지나 나타나서는 이헌의 시체 대신 역리 김검손의 시체를 거두어 장사지낸 경위를 듣게 된다. 뒤이어 나타난 김검손에게서 그의 전생 이야기를 들으며 이번에 발생한 시체가 뒤바뀐 일이 실은 전생의 인연 때문임을 알게 된다. 피생은 슬퍼하는 이헌의 혼백을 사생의 이치를 설명하여 달래준다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;이와 같은 내용인 「피생명몽록」은 이극신에 대한 비판과 사생관의 문제라는 두 개의 큰 줄기로 짜여져 있다. 이극신에 대한 비판은 주로그의 불효에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 그러나 그 내용을 곰곰이 뒤집어 보면 실은 끔찍한 패륜 행위이다. 이렇게 이극신에 대한 비판이 과도하게 등장하는 것은 이극신이 1604년 이후 유영경을 중심으로 한 소북정권의 핵심 멤버였기 때문이다. 「피생명몽록」에서 이극신에 대한 비판은 실은 당시 권력을 잡은 소북 정권에 대한 비판이었던 것이다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;「피생명몽록」에는 세 가지 사생관이 등장한다. 이헌의 유교적 사생관, 김검손의 불교적 사생관, 피생의 장자적 사생관이 그것이다. 피생은 김검손의 삼생인연설을 꾸짖는다. 슬퍼하는 이헌에 대해서는 장자적 사생관을 들어 위로해준다. 「피생명몽록」에서 사생관의 문제가 이렇게 중요하게 다루어진 것은 이 작품이 임진왜란 중 억울하게 죽은 원혼들을 위로해주는 해원에 그 목적이 있었기 때문이다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;An Illusion of Pisaeng is created in seventeenth century. Pisaeng lived in Yeoju. He set out on a trip and arrived Mt. Wonjeok in Icheon. In the night, he met Sir. Lee-Heon and bondman Kim-Keomson in dream. They are ghosts died in Imjinwaeran.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Pisaeng heard of Lee-Heon&quot;s story. Lee-Heon had three suns and Lee-Keaksin is the eldest. But Lee-Keaksin did not buried Lee-Heon&quot;s corpse in the past twelve years. This time, he buried Kim-Keomson&quot;s corpse instead of Lee-Heon&quot;s in mistake.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Kim-Keomson refuted Lee-Heon&quot;s story. Lee-Keaksin is his sun in his previous life. They have a karmic relation. For this reason, Lee-Keaksin buried his corpse instead of Lee-Heon&quot;s. Lee-Heon and Kim-Keomson disfuted each other. Pisaeng refuted Kim-Keomson&quot;s story and comforted Lee-Heon&quot;s lamentation. He gave an explanation of an outlook of life and death to both of them.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;An Illusion of Pisaeng have two essential themes. One is a severe criticism to Lee-Keaksin and the other is three outlooks of life and death. Criticism to Lee-Keaksin is primarily the want of his filial piety. In fact, he is a corrupt official and member of Sobuk Faction in 1600s. For this reason, Lee-Keaksin is criticised in An Illusion of Pisaeng.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;An Illusion of Pisaeng have three outlooks of life and death. Lee-Heon&quot;s outlook is confucian&quot;s, Kim-Keomson&quot;s outlook is buddist&quot;s and Pisaeng&quot;s outlook is Zhuanze&quot;s. Pisaeng refuted Kim-Keomson&quot;s outlook and comforted Lee-Heon&quot;s lamentation. An Illusion of Pisaeng comforted all ghosts died in Imjinwaeran.
