Women"s organizations have helped bring about legislation to promote gender equality, including the Equal Employment Law (EEL). The EEL has mitigated sex discrimination and has helped alter popular attitudes. Yet the Equal Employment Law has generated only limited successes because true equal employment required the radical transformation of gender relations, with serious implications for the organization of the national economy and of family life. Thus, the profile of women in the economy in the twenty-first century is not bright. The gap between the ideal promoted by the Equal Employment Law and the reality of women"s employment remains considerable.
