There have been various analyses of the existential construction with the expletive there (Chomsky 1986, 1991,1995, 2000; Groat 1995, 1999; Lasnik 1995, 1999; Bo?kovi? 1997, Kim 2004 among others). They can provide a partial account but not a completely satisfactory account of the data involving such complicated phenomena as agreement, scope differences, anaphoric binding, NPI licensing as well as Case licensing in Exceptional Case Marking (ECM) constructions. As an alternative way I propose that the associate NP covertly moves and adjoins to the expletive there in the relevant local phase and stays in the trace position of the chain of there in case there raises, taking the expletive there to be an LF affix, which is required to be attached to an NP at LF, as suggested by Chomsky (1991) and Lasnik (1995) and that the affixal property of there can be satisfied through its base position also, considering it a kind of the expletive chain property, while the associate of there can have its Case licensed under Agree with T (or v in the Case of ECM) as suggested in Chomsky (1999, 2000, 2001).
