애니메이션 영화 〈슈렉〉의 기호학적 분석 - 등장인물의 이미지 및 이데올로기를 중심으로

Semiotical Analysis of Animation Movie ‘Shrek’: Characters" Images and Ideologies

  이 연구는 극장용 애니메이션이 점차 증가하고 있으며 그 관객층이 성인으로까지 확장되고 있는 시점에서, 막강한 헐리웃의 자본력을 바탕으로 최근 개봉한 애니메이션 중 최고의 흥행성적을 거둔 <슈렉>을 기호학적으로 분석하였다. 계열체와 통합체 분석결과, 슈렉은 전형적인 영웅의 역할을 수행하지만 멋진 모습으로의 변신이 부재하는 ‘변형된 야수’, 피오나는 마술에 걸린 모습이 미녀이고 원래의 모습이 추녀라는 점에서 애니메이션의 전형성에서는 일탈되었으나 결정적인 순간에 운명을 받아들이고 선택받아야 하는 ‘변형된 미녀’임을 알 수 있었다. 기존의 애니메이션 인물 범주에서 주인공들이 부분적인 일탈성을 보여주지만 용감한 남성과 수동적인 여성의 결혼이야기라는 기본적인 골격에서는 벗어나지 못하고 있었다. 이데올로기 및 신화분석 결과, 친근하고 인간적인 야수와 마법에 걸려 미인이었지만 착하고 못생긴 공주 이야기로 변형되었을 뿐, ‘권선징악’과 ‘해피엔딩’의 디즈니 신화를 벗어나지 못하고 있었다. 또한 남성은 사랑에서 능동적이고 적극적이며 청혼을 해야하는 존재로, 여성은 청혼을 받아야 하며 진실한 사랑의 키스를 받아야 비로소 마법에서 풀린다는 수동적이고 소극적인 여성의 신화를 실천하고 있었다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study presents a qualitative finding to explain ideology or myth of characters and the story of the animation “Shrek” based on semiotic analysis.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Major findings of this research are as follows. First, the results of syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis shows that Shrek is a ‘modified beast’, acting the role of hero without changing into a prince or ‘nice guy’, and that Fiona is a ‘modified beauty’, varying from the stereotype of animation films because she is a beautiful princess when under a spell, while her real appearance is ugly. Despite these variances, however, the basic framework of the story ultimately follows the pattern of a typical fairy-tale -- the marriage of a brave and active man and a passive woman.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This leads to the second finding, which shows that as a result of ideology and myth analysis, we find that except for a few transformations, Shrek follows in the Disney myth of ‘happily ever after’ and ‘good overcomes evil’ plot. Also, the hero must enact the part of ‘brave knight’ and actively seek out the hand of the princess, while the princess must passively wait to receive ‘the kiss of true love’ and a proposal of marriage in order to escape from magic of imprecations.
