1970년대 청년문화구성체의 역사적 형성 과정 - 대중음악의 소비양상을 중심으로

The Formation of 1970s Korean Youth Culture: Focusing on the Cultural Consumption of Popular Music

  1970년대 한국 사회에 새로운 형태의 대중문화가 등장했다. 그 중심에는 포크 장르의 대중음악이 있었고, 이 음악과 관련된 여러 문화적 실천, 텍스트, 기호가 소비되었다. 소비의 주체도 이전의 성인 계층과는 구별되는, 대학생 중심의 청년 집단이었다. 이 문화는 ‘청년문화"라고 불려지게 되었고, 기성세대가 누리던 대중문화와 충돌을 일으키게 되었다. 이것은 한국 대중문화사에 있어서, 문화적 헤게모니를 행사하는 지배집단과 피지배집단 간의 문화적 긴장이 발생한 최초의 역사적 현장이었다. 이와 같은 역사적인 중요성을 지니는 문화적 현상이었음에도 불구하고, 청년문화를 다루는 사회적 인식과 학술적인 논의가 부족한 실정이다. 이 연구는 위와 같은 점을 문제의식으로 삼고, 그러한 문제를 극복하여 청년문화가 한국 대중문화의 흐름 속에서 차지하는 역사적 위치와 의미를 재정립해 보고자 하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 따라서, 이 연구는 청년문화가 형성·존속할 수 있는 토대를 제공한 역사적 조건, 이 조건이 청년문화를 형성시킨 방식, 그리고 그렇게 형성된 문화 안에서 이루어진 의미실천의 세부적인 과정들을 살펴본다. 이에 대한 가장 효과적인 설명을 위해 그로스버그(1992)의 ‘문화구성체(cultural formation)"와 ‘감수성(sensibility)"의 개념을 적용한다. 즉 연구는 청년문화를 “청년 문화구성체”로서 바라봄으로써 그 속에 관여하는 감수성의 실체에 대한 고찰이다.

  In the midst of the turbulent times of 1970s South Korea, a new form of popular culture arose that caught the attention of many. In the center of this new culture lay popular music which mostly consisted of the folk genre. Other cultural practices, texts, and signs closely related to this music were also found to be consumed. The consumers were distinctly different from the existing adult consumers of the established popular culture. These new consumers were the youth―mainly university students. Therefore, this culture came to be called ‘Youth Culture." Youth Culture was soon caught up in collision with the established popular culture of the adults. This collision was the first site ever in the history of Korean popular culture that a state of tension between a dominant group of the cultural hegemony and a subordinate group was generated. As historically important a value Youth Culture holds as a cultural phenomenon, there has been a lack of social consideration and discussion concerning the subject. While finding its starting point and main research goal from such problems, this study attempts to relocate Youth Culture into its original historical location and to rediscover its historical value. Therefore, this paper examines the conditional foundations that made it possible for Youth Culture to come into being and to persist, the way in which these conditions actually functioned to form the culture, and the detailed process of the practices of signification that actually took place within the culture. For the most effective illustration, Grossberg"s(1992) concepts of ‘cultural formation" and ‘sensibility" were applied. Thus, in this study, the 70s Korean Youth Culture is examined as the Youth Cultural Formation, created and maintained by specific relations among youth sensibilities.
